Lee Kui Restaurant is found at Mosque Street, about 5 mins walk from Chinatown MRT (NE4) station.Lee Kui Restaurant's oyster egg comes with a generous serving of oysters. The 'goose' meat dish which is really duck meat !The $28 braised pig trotters with chestnuts. Rather expensive considering it was very average and weak-tasting. At this price, I'd rather go for a German deep-fried knuckle version.Pepper crayfish. One of the better dishes. A pity we didn't try the (steamed) fishes, which should be the pride and highlight for any Teochew restaurant.

The bak kut teh here is the clear and peppery type, although the spiciness of the peppercorns used is very mild and weak. The pork rib meat was done just right, tender (seemingly from long slow-cooking) and not overly stiff like what you usually get at the Balestier Road stalls. Overall, this stall is one of the better choices for BKT and braised pork trotters in and around the Toa Payoh region. $30+ will get you and 3 companions a full meal - a generously-sized braised pork trotter; 4 bowls of pork rib soup; a plate of mixed pig tripe/intestines/innards, tofu and braised eggs; one plate of steamed peanuts; a plate of garlicky (lightly) salted vegetables; and rice per pax. Incredible value for money !

This airconditioned shop sits among a row of quiet HDB shophouses facing Alexandra road, opposite Alexandra Hospital and Queensway Shopping Centre. It offers traditional kueh lovers a range of handmade kuehs and other pastries. Interestingly, the Chinese name of the shop is much more complex than its English name .The glutinous rice kuehs were cheap at 70c (5 for $3.50) , compare this to Yong's which retail at 80c but is only slight tastier. However, is that they've stucked to the tradition of making soon kueh (笋粿) with real bamboo shoots (笋).

It made the news again in January 2007, when ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, 4 months after his ousting in a military coup, made his way here for lunch in a visit to Singapore. He reportedly ate with an entourage of 17 and after that gave the thumbs up to Mr Ng, the shop owner. What more can I say ? And where else can you pay less than $10 for a meal and maybe get to eat beside the movers and shakers of Asia ? Right here at this little corner of Rangoon Road.

Chai Chee Noodle Village has set up various branches around the island. This stall in Parkway Parade seems to have kept up its standard. You would have expected good bak chor mee noodles to come mostly from the seasoned hands of a middle-aged or even ah pek, but this stall was manned by a young chap barely out of his 20s who was cool and steady despite the longish queue even at 230pm on a weekday. Quite impressive !
This bowl of minced meat noodles costs $3.50.

Commonwealth Avenue Cooked Food Centre is actually closer to Margaret Drive and near the Queenstown Library. Some people refer to this food centre as the 'Margaret Drive' food centre, this photo I took shows the official name and clears the confusion once and for all !Don't be fooled by the serene quietness around Hai Kee Cha Kua Teow's stall in the afternoon. This stall is so popular, you'll not miss the long queue when it opens in the evenings. In fact, I was there at 5pm on a Saturday and the queue was already 4-5 persons long !
For $2.50, you have a really big generous plate of char kway teow loaded with cockles and deep-fried lard. The thing about me is, I prefer my plate of fried kuay teow sweetened with lotsa stickily-sweet-type black soya sauce. But Hai Kee's version was e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y light on this. Blame it on the characteristic Teochew habit of light seasoning - the signboard did, afterall, warn 'Teochew' :). So try Hai Kee if you don't care much for your char kway teow's sweetness, or lack of it. Go also, to be entertained by the owner's 'power-kungfu' style of frying his noodles - I don't know how to better describe it - just go see, or should I say hear, it.
Opens from 5pm and closed on Sundays.

Located at Stall 13 Jackson Centre Kopitiam, 39 MacPherson Road, Singapore 348468

This chilli crab and pepper crab specialist serves up some of the best value-for-money crabs around. It obviously does so by focusing solely on the food, ingredients and cooking, coz you'll find things here a little short in the service and ambience department. First the food court where it is located is a decrepit 80s'ish non-aircon building. Be prepared to get sweaty while you devour your crustaceans, spicy king prawns, crayfish and fried chicken here.
But where else can you get a nice crab meal for $20 per person (2 large crabs and side dishes for a group of 5) I can honestly say the buns (to be had with the chilli crab's sauce) are the best I've tasted in a long time. No, make that in memory. Great buns, really. 2007 Jul update: well, it looks like I might have spoken too fast, the price of the crabs here, it seems, have gone up since my Mar 2007 visit, and is now about $40/kg. Well, quality is still there. Damned GST increase ! or maybe not...read on... This mini-hawker centre is going to close down soon (en-bloc fever ?!), and quite a few of the other seafood/hawker stalls have already moved out (did I hear someone say 'less competitition' ?). Fret not, cause Bayshore Delicious seafood (the one owned, I think, by actor Tang Hu) was spotted nearby in a coffeeshop nearby facing Upper Serangoon Road. Meanwhile, go now to savour your favourite food before it's gone !

Both the Chinatown Complex market and food centre have shifted to a temporary site near the Outram MRT (EW16, NE3) train station. It is a tight squeeze and much stuffier now.Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck offers a range of duck rice, noodles, porridge and kway chap dishesJin Ji's braised duck meat and kway chap is one of the better ones in this area. The duck rice here is also one of the favourites of the more hurriedThe extremely thin and soft kway chap is very easy on the gullet. Slurp it up and it slides effortlessly down your throat. I ordered another bowl and it didn't leave me feeling bloated after my mealThe secret here is really in the chilli sauce, a sourish concoction of minced chilli and garlic among other ingredients

This unassuming stall serves up very thin and soft kway chap (flat rice noodles) unlike many others' thick noodle texture and often starchy taste. The braised duck is very well done without being overly salty. There is a choice of plain white or yam rice, as well as porridge or noodles if you're just going for duck dishes.

Located at #07-23 HDB Block 54 Chin Swee Road., Singapore 160054

This traditional no-frills Chinese restaurant is located in a kooky part of the seventh floor of an old HDB block near to Manhattan House and seems to have been around like forever. Ok not forever, but easily a few decades. It's popular for dim sum, and a favourite dish of mine here is the crispy roast pork cubes (also see entry for Crystal Jade Toa Payoh under dim sum category). Overall quality and service is nothing to shout about it continues to hold its own against fancy new players in the uppity newer malls. So try this out at least once before the unstoppable tide of upgrading (en-bloc!) closes it down some day.

Categories: Chinese, Vegetarian (Chinese), Laksa, Yong Tau Foo, Zhi Char, Hawker

Located at Block 134, Geylang East Avenue 1., Singapore 380134
I'm told this vegetarian eatery was a previous Yummy King winner. It actually consists of a few stalls in a coffeeshop selling various vegetarian dishes that mimic conventional Chinese hawker food. The coffeeshop is at a corner-end of a row of HDB shophouses facing Sims Avenue. Some Buddhist temples are found in this area of Geylang, which explains why you'll see the occasional nun or monk buying their food at this shop. There are zhi-char-style vegetarian dishes, a vegetarian yong tau foo stall and a mixed rice/beehoon stall. Prices are very reasonable from $2 up
